Three Stone Rings
Three stones side by side for past, present and future, on a single band.
The meaning behind three
A three stone ring puts a center stone between two smaller ones. The most common reading is past, present and future, which makes it a favorite for engagements and for anniversaries after many years together. Some couples see in it the two of them and what they build, others choose it simply because three stones sparkle more than one.
Choosing the side stones
The side stones can repeat the shape of the center or contrast with it. Three emerald cuts in a row give a clean, Art Deco line, while tapered baguettes or small trillions on each side make the center stone look larger. The side stones are usually a third to half the size of the center one.
A look that works every day
Three stones spread along the finger rather than rising high above it, so the ring catches less on sweaters and gloves than a tall solitaire. It covers more of the finger, which flatters wider hands. A plain sterling silver band keeps the attention on the stones and leaves room for a wedding band next to it.
Care and cleaning
Dirt collects in the gaps between the three stones faster than on a single stone. Soak the ring a few minutes in warm water with a drop of mild soap, then brush gently under the stones with a soft toothbrush and rinse. Store it in its own pouch so the corners of emerald cut stones do not scratch other jewelry.
