Gold Plated Rings
The warm glow of yellow gold at the price of silver, on a 925 silver base.
An Italian invention
In 1805 the Italian chemist Luigi Brugnatelli, a friend of Alessandro Volta, used the brand new electric battery to deposit a thin layer of gold on silver medals. It was the first gold electroplating. Two centuries later, the principle has not changed. The ring is dipped in a gold bath and a current lays the gold evenly over every curve of the metal, including the prongs that hold the stone.
Gold plated, not solid gold
All the rings in this collection are 925 silver covered with a layer of gold. They are not solid gold, and we say so clearly. The plating gives the look and warmth of gold, while the silver underneath keeps the ring strong and the price gentle. Several of our designs come in yellow, white or rose, so you can choose the same ring in the color that suits you.
Who yellow suits best
Yellow gold flatters warm and olive skin tones and goes well with other gold jewelry, watches and bracelets. It also changes the look of a clear stone, giving moissanite a softer, warmer sparkle than white metal does. Many people like to mix it, wearing a yellow band next to a white engagement ring for a two-tone stack.
Making the plating last
Plating wears where the ring rubs most, usually on the underside of the band, after months or years depending on how you wear it. To make it last, put perfume and cream on before the ring, take it off to wash your hands with harsh soap, for sport and for the pool. Clean it gently with a soft cloth, never with a silver polishing cloth, which would remove the gold.
